Best Honeymoon Places in India in December

Planning a December honeymoon in India? Compare Andaman, Kerala, Munnar, Kashmir, Auli, Himachal and Thailand by weather, style and booking tips.

December is one of the best months of the year for an Indian honeymoon, but only if you match the region to the kind of trip you want. The islands and Kerala are at their driest and calmest, while Kashmir, Auli and the Himalayan hill stations turn to snow. This guide sorts the options by honeymoon style, so you can choose in one read.

Beach and island honeymoons: Andaman and Thailand

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Andaman is the strongest beach pick for a December honeymoon in India. The monsoon is over, the sea is calm, the water is clear, and ferries between islands run reliably. That also makes it peak season, so expect full hotels around Christmas and New Year.

A typical honeymoon plan splits the stay between Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep):

  • Port Blair: the Cellular Jail and its light and sound show, plus the airport and ferry connections.

  • Havelock: Radhanagar Beach, snorkelling and scuba diving. Most couples spend the most nights here.

  • Neil Island: a quieter, slower island that suits two or three nights of doing very little.

Two practical points. Inter-island ferries are the one part of an Andaman trip you should book early in December, because seats sell out. And if you plan to scuba dive, keep a gap of about a day before any flight home.

We compare Andaman against its two main rivals in Andaman vs Goa vs Kerala. If you have already decided, see our Andaman honeymoon packages.

Thailand

Thailand's cooler, drier season starts around November, which makes December a good time for Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman Sea coast. A common honeymoon shape is a few nights in Bangkok followed by a beach stay, which gives you a city and an island in one trip.

It is also one of the most crowded periods of the year, so book flights and hotels well ahead. Entry requirements for Indian travellers change, so read our Thailand visa guide for Indians and our Thailand TDAC guide before you pay for anything. Packages are on our Thailand honeymoon page.

Kerala and Munnar: backwaters and tea hills in one trip

Kerala is at its best from roughly November to February, and December sits in the middle of that window. Rain is rare, the days are warm without being harsh, and the backwaters are calm enough for a slow houseboat stay.

The classic honeymoon route runs in this order:

  1. Munnar: tea gardens, viewpoints and cold, clear mornings. Pack a warm layer, because nights are properly cold.

  2. Thekkady: the Periyar area, for spice plantations and a forest stay.

  3. Alleppey or Kumarakom: a night on a houseboat on the backwaters.

  4. Kovalam or Varkala: a beach finish before the flight home.

You can shorten this to Munnar plus Alleppey if you only have four or five nights. Mixing hills and backwaters is what makes Kerala work as a honeymoon, because the two halves feel like different trips.

If a tree house stay in the hills appeals, see our Munnar tree house honeymoon package or the wider Munnar honeymoon packages. For the full circuit with backwaters, start with Kerala honeymoon packages, and read how much a Kerala trip costs before you set a budget.

Snow honeymoons: Kashmir, Auli and Himachal

Snow is the other reason people choose December. The honest caveat is that snowfall cannot be promised for a particular date, so plan the trip so it is still good on a clear, cold, snowless day.

Kashmir

Kashmir in December is cold, quiet and very photogenic. Gulmarg is the main snow stop, with its gondola and skiing for beginners, and a houseboat night on Dal Lake in Srinagar adds the romance. Nights are well below freezing, so choose hotels with reliable heating.

Weather can delay flights into Srinagar and block roads, so keep a spare day at the end of the trip rather than booking a same-day connection home. See our Kashmir honeymoon packages.

Auli

Auli in Uttarakhand is a small ski resort with long views of the Himalayan peaks. December snow is likely but not guaranteed, and January and February are the more dependable months. It suits couples who want a quiet mountain break rather than a long tour. Check the road and ropeway status close to your dates, and look at our Auli packages.

Himachal

Manali and Shimla are the easiest snow honeymoons to reach, with good road and rail links from Delhi. Solang Valley is the usual place for snow activities near Manali. Rohtang Pass is closed for the winter, so build your plan around the town and the valleys rather than the pass. See our Himachal honeymoon packages.

Places to think twice about in December

Bali. December falls in Bali's wet season. Expect humid weather and regular rain, and some days will be lost to showers. Many couples still enjoy it, but if rain would ruin the trip for you, Bali is better from around April to October. Prices still climb around Christmas and New Year, so you pay peak rates for off-peak weather.

Goa. Goa is the default December choice and it is lively, with beach parties, markets and New Year crowds. That is the opposite of a quiet honeymoon. If you want Goa without the crush, South Goa is calmer than the northern belt, and booking early matters. If you want a quieter beach, Andaman is the better December pick; our Andaman vs Goa vs Kerala comparison sets out the trade-offs.

When to book for December

The tightest stretch is the week from Christmas to New Year. Flights, island ferries and good hotels in Andaman, Kerala and Kashmir fill first, and prices rise as they do. If you want those dates, book as early as you can; waiting until December usually means fewer room choices and higher rates.

If your dates are flexible, the first half of December and the days after the first week of January are noticeably calmer. You get the same weather with thinner crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Is December a good month for a honeymoon in India?

Yes. The monsoon has ended across most of the country, the islands and Kerala are dry, and the north offers snow. The trade-off is crowds and higher prices, especially from Christmas to New Year.

Which place is best for a beach honeymoon in December?

The Andaman Islands are the strongest choice, with calm seas, clear water and good snorkelling and diving. Kovalam and Varkala in Kerala are good alternatives if you want to combine a beach with backwaters and hills.

Where can we see snow on a December honeymoon?

Gulmarg in Kashmir, Manali and Solang Valley in Himachal, and Auli in Uttarakhand are the usual choices. Snow is likely in Kashmir and at higher altitudes in Himachal, but it cannot be guaranteed for a specific date.

Is Kerala good for a honeymoon in December?

Yes, it is one of the best months. Days are warm and dry, houseboats run on calm water, and Munnar is cool enough for a cosy hill stay.

How early should we book a December honeymoon?

For the Christmas to New Year week, book as early as you can, because flights, ferries and good hotels sell out first. For early December or mid January, a few weeks of notice is often enough, though earlier gives you more choice.
