Char Dham Yatra Route Overview

Char Dham Yatra covers the four sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in Uttarakhand, usually starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh and moving in a clockwise direction.

The most popular road route is Haridwar → Barkot → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Guptkashi/Sonprayag → Kedarnath → Joshimath/Pipalkoti → Badrinath → back to Rishikesh or Haridwar.

Trek: ~16–20 km from Gaurikund to Kedarnath Temple

Tip
: This is the most challenging segment; plan for overnight stops if needed. Helicopter rides are also available.

Kedarnath → Badrinath

Distance

Duration: 10–12 hours (or split across two days)

Tip
: Long drive — consider an overnight stay in Rishikesh or Dehradun.

Trek Highlights

Yamunotri Trek: 6–7 km from Janki Chatti, moderate difficulty, suitable for most pilgrims.
Kedarnath Trek: 16–20 km from Gaurikund, challenging for beginners, but stunning Himalayan views.

Char Dham E‑pass / Registration

At present, Char Dham Yatra requires free online registration for every pilgrim; earlier “e‑pass” terminology used during Covid has now largely been merged into the standard QR‑based registration system.

Pilgrims can register and download their Yatra registration letter / QR code through the official Uttarakhand Char Dham portal (https://registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in), mobile app, or designated offline centres, and it is checked at multiple checkpoints on the route.
